Exciting news! A new peer counseling service called QuadTalk is opening in the quad tomorrow evening. It seems long overdue, seeing as about a quarter of the student body lives in the quad and thus faces a huge distance barrier to accessing preexisting peer counseling resources in the Yard or River Houses. So it's huge for people to have QuadTalk available close to home.
Today our mission was to get the word out. (After all, what's the point if no one knows it exists?) And of course that meant...
PHOTO SHOOT SATURDAY! We photographed our amazing peer volunteers with the simple slogan "I support mental health in the quad." Some highlights below:
There was a lot of resistance to being photographed from people who were in their pajamas, which is to be expected, though it makes me wonder exactly what they think we would ever do with their "imperfect" photographs. And if it's possible to have much control over one's own image, even if he or she never lets other people take his/her portrait (especially when most photos we see are digital and can be downloaded by anyone). Furthermore, what does it mean to choose not to show support of mental health resources (which everyone we met agreed are incredibly important) out of concern one won't look his or her best? Priorities, priorities...food for thought.
Anyway, setting up and the actual photo shoot took about an hour and a half, followed by three hours of editing, and voilà! A photo campaign, we have. (And a burrito to celebrate!)
